ÜberProject related comments for Proofing and Formatting
This project--Vol. 65: Lower Canada, Mississippi Valley 1696-1702 (1900)--is a test project for DPC's ÜberProject #2 "The Jesuit Relations". 8 other volumes are in the rounds or PP stage at DP-INT, and have been ongoing for several years. Perhaps the combination of old typography, English + French + occasional other languages has deterred them. But I think it's just our "tasse de café".--Simple Simon
This volume alternates pages in original French and English translation, plus preface and notes in English only. French typography is of the period, with long 's', u/v and i/j substitution, and a number of other emphasis marks and special characters. If you have a question about spelling or anything else you find in the images, please leave a [** comment] on the edited page. You can also post a comment in the project forum thread--be sure to include the .png number so the PM knows where your concern is.
You may not see some of the following in any given volume, but you need to be aware that there were different characters that were used in the original diaries kept by the Jesuits.
Thank you for your patience--we believe we can produce an end-result that will preserve historicity, while offering a readable version for those who are only interested in the content of the e-book.

Proofing Alerts and Instructions
- Follow the scans to the maximum extent possible.
- Preserve the u/v and i/j substitutions and add [*] after the word.
- There are differences in the use of accents--use only what is in the images, do NOT put in "missing" accents.
- Preserve the small y + diaeresis [ÿ], see the "+" drop-down list.
- Proof the "long s" as s[*]. In older texts there are two different forms of the lower-case letter "s": long s and round s. The round s looks like the modern letter, while the long s looks more like the letter f, except that part or all of the crossbar is missing. Here are some examples:

- Preserve the "taurus" [ȣ] marker (signifying "ou" or "w"), see the "+" drop-down list.
- Preserve the "lowered 3" [ƺ] or ezh (signifying "ue"), see the "+" drop-down list.
- Preserve the small o + macron or tilde [ō or õ] (signifying "n" or "m"), see the "O" drop-down list.
- Preserve "superscripted" abbreviations--proof as "wordstem^abbrev".
- Preserve the œ ligature, see the "O" drop-down list.
- Preserve the "raised 9" (signifying "us")--proof as 9*. It may look like

- Preserve the "ll" with crossbar (signifying "livres")-- proof as ll*. It may look like

- If capitals are missing where you'd expect them, or inserted gratuitously, leave the text as it appears in the scan.
- Watch out for letters with macrons, where you would NOT normally expect macrons to appear. Use the coding for diacritical marks that is suggested in the Proofreading Guidelines: i.e., [=x] where x is the letter with the macron. Usually, these letters "+ macron" represent various multi-letter abbreviations used by the Jesuit authors.
- Watch for other special typography, mention it in the Forum, so further action can be taken if needed.
- There are normal footnotes, sidenotes, and embedded page-numbers. Please place side-notes as a separate paragraph ahead of the text they refer to. Proof footnotes normally, with marker as xxxx[##]. Proof embedded page-numbers as xxxx [pp] xxxxx--note the spaces before and after the page number.
- In old French, spaces between words frequently seem to be omitted. This may have been usage of the time (dela is normal), or may be OCR artifacts. If you are sure the words should be separated, add the spaces, like this xxxx[ ]xxxx so as to keep the words together, even if line rewraps.
Formatting Alerts and Instructions
In addition to normal formatting:
- The HTML version will employ dotted underlines + "hinting" to clarify the above typographical usages. If you feel this type of clarification is needed, please insert suggested "hinting" in curly brackets, after any of the instances mentioned above, or elsewhere. For example, if an abbreviation reads "cap^ne", you could add (not substitute) {capitaine}. In instances where the hinting will always be the same, for example "ll*" will always be hinted with {livres}, this is not necessary--it will be handled via regex.
- The ISO-8859-1 version (to be produced at PP stage) will default all instances mentioned above to acceptable text substitutes. If you feel that this is not obvious, please suggest a text substitute, in curly brackets.
