Common Problems
- you can't proof at all.
- you keep getting the same page to proof.
- you can't log out of the Forum.
- you can proof only a page or two, then the system bounces you back to the login page.
Most of these can be corrected by properly setting up your browser.
General
For best results, your browser should be set up with the following options:
- Cookies accepted/on
- Javascript enabled*
Also, if in your Forum Profile, "Launch in New Window" is set to "Yes", you must:
- allow pop-ups(and make sure pop-ups are not being blocked by another utility).
Finally:
- PC clock set to correct date & time. While not a browser option, if your PC's clock is way out in the future, your cookies may expire as soon as they arrive, stopping you from logging in or proofing, etc. Make sure your PCs clock is correct!
Setting these options correctly solves most problems in using the site. Sometimes, however, a firewall or proxy (on your PC, LAN, or ISP) caches pages, which results in your getting the same page to proof over and over.
Internet Explorer
Configuring Internet Explorer
Cookies
Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy (not sure after here) allows you to customise your cookie handling. In version 6.0 you can set a cookie policy for each web site.
Javascript
IE 5.x & 6 Tools -> Internet Options -> Security. Click on the Custom Level button for the 'Internet' zone. Scroll down to the 'Scripting' section. Set the 'Active Scripting' option to 'Enable'.
Caching
Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings -> Check for newer versions of stored pages->'Automatically'
pop-up windows
Not Applicable - IE has nothing to control pop-ups.
IE7
Internet Explorer 7 now has pop-up blocker controls.
Tools -> Pop-up Blocker -> Turn Off/On Pop-up Blocker (Global Disable|Enable)
Tools -> Pop-up Blocker -> Pop-up Blocker Settings (Per site Disable|Enable)
Other helpful tips
- Removing the status bar.—You can remove the status bar from the browser window by unselecting the "Status Bar" option in the "View" menu. However, after recent security related changes in Internet Explorer 6, the status bar will reappear in the proofreading interface window. In order to avoid this, add "*.pgdpcanada.net" to the browser list of trusted sites. Under the tools menu, select "Internet Options", then click the security tab. Select the "Trusted sites" icon, and click the "Sites..." button. In this dialog, type "*.pgdpcanada.net" (without the double quotes) into the "Add this web site to the zone:" text area, and then click "Add".
Netscape Navigator (7.02)
Cookies
Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Cookies -> Select anything but 'disable cookies'; if you select 'Enable cookies based on privacy settings,' some other options may need to be set, but either 'enable cookies for the originating site only' or 'enable all cookies' will work for DP immediately.
Javascript
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Check 'Enable java'
Caching
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Caching
'Compare the page in the cache to the page on the network: When page is out of date'

JavaScript

Caching
File -> Preferences -> History and Cache Select "always" for "check documents" Select "always" for "check images" Select "always" for "check other" (may not be necessary)
(Typical default for each is 5 hours, but "check images" is often set to "never". Return settings to your default when done proofing for better performance.)
(Note: only "check documents" need be changed to "always". Setting "check images" and "check other" to "always" will probably not help within DPC, and will slow down access significantly to users with slow connections, as every image, javascript, etc. will be reloaded every time the page is accessed. The default setting should work fine. 5-jan-2004)
pop-up windows
File->Quick Preferences
Check "open requested popup windows only." This setting will stop all ads and nasties, but enable links you wilfully clicked, etc.
Opera note: People using earlier versions of Opera have had lots of problems getting cookies & caching to work, and may not have ever found completely successful settings. Some people reported success with version 6, but early releases of version 7 (for example, 7.03) did not work. However, the latest version of Opera (version 7.11) has been found to work quite well using the above settings. Plus it has other improvements over prior versions. So we suggest that you consider upgrading to this release of Opera.
(Confirmation from another user: 7.11 on Windows works just fine once "check documents" is set to "always". 5-jan-2004)
Mozilla / Firefox
Cookies
Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Cookies -> Select either 'Enable all cookies' (not recommended for privacy reasons) or 'Enable cookies for the originating site only'.
Javascript
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plugins -> Enable JavaScript for: Check 'Navigator' and then check all the options under "allow scripts to".
Caching
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache -> "Compare the page in the cache to the page on the network": Select "When page is out of date".
Pop-ups
Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy and Security -> Popup Windows -> Select either "Allow Popups" (not recommended for privacy reasons) or "Suppress Popups" and then click on the "Exceptions" box and add the DPC website address "www.pgdpcanada.net/c" to that exceptions list.
Note: The spellchecker is known to work in Mozilla 1.3 & Mozilla 1.7. It does not appear to work in Mozilla 1.4, 1.5 & 1.6. This is a bug in Mozilla, not the DPC site. The spellchecker in Firefox 2.0 and higher seems to work fine at DPC, except that any word with numeric digits in it is accepted without warning (an aspell 'bug', not DPC). Thus a common OCR error like "a11" for "all" will not be flagged by this spellchecker. Using the DPCustomMono2 font will help make these more visible. Also, the DPC WordCheck will find such errors.
Safari for Mac OS X
The current versions of Mac OS X (10.4.x) and Safari (2.x) just work when used with the Proofing Interface -- including use of DPCustomMono2. The following is true of any Safari release:
Cookies
Safari -> Preferences -> Security Click on radio button Always or Only from sites you navigate to
Javascript
Safari -> Preferences -> Security Click on Enable JavaScript check-box.
Caching
(Optional) Safari -> Empty Cache (or hit Opt-Cmd-e) before starting DP session.
Note: As of Safari 2.x, JavaScript is still broken so that quick tags will not work. Consider using Camino or Firefox if you want this functionality.
